About Swell Charts
Swell Charts show the interaction of the coastline and the ocean in a visual format. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have enabled graphic data integration (such as ocean bathymetry (seafloor topography) and CDIP buoy locations) to be displayed in a manner similar to boating-navigational charts. This information is carefully overlaid on a beautiful background of high-resolution satellite photography that has been digitally re-mastered to enhance colors.

Swell Chart's Graphic Design
Swell Charts provides a more aesthetic appeal than typical detailed function charts. To that end, we began looking for the most attractive and appropriate graphic design. After countless iterations of style/content/function balance, we opted for the classic look of 17th and 18th century nautical charts. Our design team spent hours researching antique English and Italian nautical charts to produce a unique blend of state-of-the-art graphic technology and historical styles.

How Swell Charts Works
Swell Charts are tools for "Swell-to-Wave" interpretation. "Raw " swell data information gathered by local buoys (swell height, direction, etc...) can be interpreted with the Swell Chart. A graphic depiction of shoreface orientation and ocean bathymetry helps to predict how an ocean swell miles away from the coast will interact at your local breaks. Swell Charts display swell windows and even preservation of wave energy by deep water canyons. These tools enable surfers to better predict the best times and places for maximum enjoyment.
